QCS Industries has made many systems over the years. Some
of these included making the complete system, where we designed to specifications the
hardware, software, and mechanics. On other projects we just made the Hardware and
Software end of the system, that is we gave it life. We are proud to be able to say that
none of these systems ever needed repair, warrantee or otherwise. We systematically built
in quality, durability, and reliability. We tend to overdesign instead of being just on.
That does not mean that we don't do value engineering, because we do. The following are
just some of the projects that we have worked on over the last 20 years.
- Environmental Chamber for exposing electro-optic and semiconductor parts
to High Dose Gamma Irradiation for McClellan AFB under contract to Computing Devices
International. The characteristics of the system are:
- Temperature: -150° to +150°C
- Vacuum: 760 to 1.0E-06 torr
- Humidity: 5 to 90%RH at 20° to 85°C
- Temperature Ramp: 10°C/hr to 120°C/hr
- Manual feed M509 Base Plug Eddy current crack
detection system for SAAP. This system tested base plugs by spinning the part, while
scanning it on the top and bottom sides, along with the thread undercut area. It has the
following characteristics:
- 200 parts/hr
- Continuous operation 3 shift/day
- Radial cracks 0.005" width, 0.250" long
- Circumferential cracks 0.005" width, 0.250" long
- Circumferential crack in the thread undercut 0.005" width,
0.250" long
- Modified the M509 Base Plug system to accept M825 base plugs for SAAP.
This system is similar to the M509 system except the height of the M825 was greater, and
the part weighed more. It has the following characteristics
- 200 parts/hr
- Continuous operation 3 shift/day
- Radial cracks 0.005" width, 0.250" long
- Circumferential cracks 0.005" width, 0.250" long
- Circumferential crack in the thread undercut 0.005" width,
0.250" long
- Automatic feed M509 Base Plug eddy current crack detection system for
LAAP
- Same characteristics as standard M509 Base plug system
- Also removed parts from conveyor at 200/hr
- Also replaced parts onto the conveyor at 200/hr less the rejects
- Electronic control system for a stub tube to tube sheet ultrasonic
thickness gauging system for General Atomics under contract to QMI®. This system rotated
the probe with the ultrasonic transducer in it so that the wall thickness could be
measured. The system rotated the probe and unwound the probe and cables as it removed
itself from within the tube. It has the following characteristics:
- Thickness gauging to within 0.001"
- Inside or outside determination of reduction in thickness
- Printout of thickness value
- Electronic control system for the M409 shell ultrasonic crack detection
system for SAAP under contract to Rompas NDE. This system had multiple channels for
simultaneously scanning at different places along a shell to improve the speed. It has the
following characteristics:
- Six UT channels
- Six distance amplitude gain gates
- Stepper motor driven
- 60 shells per hour
- Intrinsically safe reject shoot so at a component failure all parts went
into reject shoot
- Operated for at least 2 years without needing repair
- Titanium tube testing control and display system for Rolmet under
contract to Grandia Labs
- Microcontroller based system with display interface
- Inspected up to 1 meter diameter pipes and tubes submerged UT
- Rotational speed 0 to 120 RPM
- Scan speed 20"/sec
- OMEs chamber nickel plating thickness testing system using ultrasonics
for Aerojet General
- Measured bonding of nickel plating on the Shuttle's OMEs chambers
- Subsurface resolution of 0.030"
- Thickness accuracy of 0.001"
- Computer generated cam follower designed to hold transducer at 90° to
the surface at all times and at a 1.00" distance.
- Chart recorder of thickness along the length of the part.
- Automatic scanning position gain correction system for ultrasonic
inspection of M409 shells for Norris Industries
- Corrected gain versus position along the length of the shell
- Independent adjustments for each position along the length
- 0 to 20 dB gain adjustment possible to compensate for ogive versus boule
thickness and angle.
- Custom strip chart recording system for ultrasonic inspection of M409
shells for SAAP
- Recorded where on the shell an indication that exceeded the maximum
allowable has occurred
- 10 channels to accommodate the ten transducers the ultrasonic system has
- Electronic control systems for a 10,000 Amp wet horizontal magnetic
particle inspection system for QMI®
- Controlled the 10,000 Amp Head/Tail stock current
- Controlled the 8,000 Amp AC/DC coil stock current
- 10% duty cycle to maintain the operating temperature within limits
- Controlled 3 phase full wave rectified current using SCRs
- Ultrasonic distance amplitude gate control module for the Automation
Industries' Reflectoscope under contract to QMI®
- Module for Automation Industries M90 Reflectoscope
- Maintained constant gain as slope was changed
- Far slope and near slope adjustment
