The M509 Base Plug system was made for Chamberlain Manufacturing, Scranton
Army Ammunition Plant. This system is a typical system made by QCS Industries and it
inspected the M509 base plug for circumferential cracks of .005" width by .250"
long in the thread undercut. Also circumferential cracks and radial cracks of the same
size were detected on both the top and bottom of the part. This system inspected 200 parts
per hour and operated for 2+ years without a failure on a two shift per day cycle. It was
a manual feed system. An operator inserted a part in the inspection wheel after taking an
inspected good part out of the inspection wheel. Rejected parts were discarded through the
reject shoot on the left hand side of the system. Another system similar to this one was
made for Louisiana Army Ammunition Plant, but it had automatic ingress and egress
capabilities. This system used a tuned unbalanced coil eddy current plugin instrument of
which the system had three. These was inserted into a Tektronix Oscilloscope along with a
three channel multiplexer so that each channel could be switched onto the scope display
for setup and calibration. The system was controlled by an Allen Bradley PLC. The PLC
controlled all the valves, motors, indicators, cylinders, and switches of the system. |
