Eddy Current InstrumentationThis is the Eddy Current instrumentation package that was developed using the Tektronix mainframe with power supply. The three identical instruments on the right are tuned probe eddy current modules for the detection of cracks in the M509 base plug. The single module on the left is the Tektronix display and time base. The module to it's right is the multiplexer for the three eddy current units. This arrangement provided a better than 4:1 noise ratio for the .005" x .250" crack in the thread undercut area, an area very difficult to reach. With special probes made by QMI® very satisfactory results were obtained.
QCS has custom made the following modules.
  • Eddy Current Amplifier/Detector modules.
  • Eddy Current Multiplexer modules.
  • Ultrasonic Distance Amplitude Gain control modules.
  • Ultrasonic Scanned Distance Amplitude Gain control modules.

The ultrasonic scanned distance gain control units are used to correct the gain as a function of the scanner position along the length of a part. The gain can be changed by a factor of 0-20dB as a function of the distance. The module accepts encoder inputs and the scanned distance can be divided into a maximum of 100 increments of different settings. In this fashion one transducer could do the work that usually three of four transducers along with three or four more UT channels would do in a mediocre fashion because a compromise on the gain setting would have to be made.
